Linking quality improvement in state public health programs to accreditation for state health departments, Phase 2

The purpose of this project is to demonstrate the application of quality improvement (QI) to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of planning, operations and services--and in turn, to improve health outcomes--in three core programmatic areas to demonstrate how state health agencies can meet the Public Health Accreditation Board standards and measures. The Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) will work with two of its affiliated organizations--the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors and the Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs--and with ASTHO's Environmental Health Directors peer network; quality improvement consultants Marni Mason and Chris Bujak; and the Foundation, to advance accreditation by: (1) supporting QI projects in maternal and child health, environmental health and chronic disease in five competitively selected state agencies; (2) delivering coordinated on-site and distance-based technical assistance to these selected states through teams made up of a QI consultant, an ASTHO staff member, and a staff member representing the affiliate organizations; (3) providing opportunities for the states to develop peer learning and networking; and (4) disseminating the results through multiple means, including national meetings, webinars, and publications.
