This grant provides support for a conference hosted by the Summit Health Institute for Research and Education, Inc. (SHIRE), entitled Building Community Engagement in Underserved Neighborhoods: The Path to Health Empowerment. The conference, November 17-18, 2011, will engage SHIRE community partners from across the Washington area to learn about childhood obesity advocacy and research, and to meet and network with individuals in foundations, research and government. In addition, the conference will create a toolkit of research and reports that will document strategies in community engagement and offer a summary of relevant government policies, resources for community engagement, and case studies to illustrate strategies for understanding the community environment and the role of community engagement in advocacy. SHIRE will distribute the toolkit throughout the Washington metropolitan area to inform organizations on how to engage community residents for change.
