Developing a method to evaluate local adaptations of policy and environmental strategies to prevent childhood obesity

This contract supports the development of a plan to evaluate local adaptation of policy and environmental strategies for obesity prevention, and is one of three such planning efforts for innovations and models that the Foundation wants to spread. Local adaptations are often critical to implementing prevention efforts. Yet toolkits, technical assistance and evaluations seldom describe local adaptations in enough detail to be shared widely, compared systematically, or assessed for their potential to achieve prevention aims in other organizations and communities. This project will help identify prevalent and important local adaptations of policy and environmental strategies emerging from Foundation programs, as well as from the $650-million Communities Putting Prevention to Work program administered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Local adaptations can then be shared for the kickoff of CDC's Community Transformation Grants and evaluated formally for their impact on childhood obesity prevention. The contractor will explore the feasibility of evaluating local adaptation of a variety of obesity prevention strategies, as well as options for measurement and data collection. The primary deliverables will be a full proposal to evaluate local adaptations of prevention strategies for childhood obesity, presentation of progress at a November 2011 meeting, and a Webinar for interested staff and grantees of the Foundation and CDC at the conclusion of the planning contract.
