The Foundation's Health Policy Fellowships Program was designed to allow midcareer health professionals and behavioral and social scientists to experience a one-year residency in Washington, D.C., working for a member of Congress on health policy. The Health Policy Fellowships Program (HPF) has received technical assistance and direction from the National Program Office (NPO) at the Institute of Medicine (IOM) since its inception in 1972. The program has overseen the fellowships of 238 recipients. Many alumni have gone on to be leaders who have significant involvement in public policy and who have contributed to the nation's health in a variety of ways. Another indication of the success of the program is the continued high demand for Health Policy Fellows in the most influential and prominent offices and committees on Capitol Hill and in the Administration. The primary activity of the NPO is the recruitment, selection, orientation and placement of the Fellows.
