Providing technical assistance to local departments of health for accreditation and quality improvement
This award will enable the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) to provide technical assistance to local health departments (LHDs) for achieving national accreditation. The national Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) will begin accepting applications in September 2011, and a recent NACCHO survey found that almost 30 percent of LHDs intend to apply within the next two years. However, many health departments need training and best-practice examples that they can adopt to meet the PHAB performance standards. This project comprises three objectives. First, to help LHDs prepare for accreditation, NACCHO will assist them in: (1) preparing accreditation-application materials, using an online tool developed by NACCHO; (2) developing a strategic plan; (3) developing a quality improvement (QI) plan and applying QI methods as required by PHAB standards; (4) obtaining a pre-submission review of application materials from the NACCHO staff; and (5) offering accreditation-preparation training at LHD meetings. Second, NACCHO will provide opportunities for LHDs to learn from and exchange experience with peers through webinars, regional meetings, teleconferences, and online learning communities. NACCHO will convene public health QI leaders and LHD coordinators of accreditation, then disseminate their experiences and recommendations to all LHDs. Third, NACCHO will continue to promote the value of accreditation through a speakers bureau of its accreditation champions and through a coordinated communications plan to promote the launch and monitor progress of the national accreditation program.
