Expanding the capacity of Your ReSource to supply affordable, refurbished medical equipment in Central New Jersey
Although the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation became a national philanthropy in 1972 and has operated on a national scale since then, it also has continued funding a limited number of local institutions and projects in the New Brunswick area and throughout New Jersey. It does so in part to honor the legacy of its founder, and in part to recognize the special responsibilities to the communities and the state in which it is located. This grant will help Your ReSource, a nonprofit organization in Mercer County, New Jersey, expand its ability to provide affordable, refurbished home medical equipment (wheelchairs, walkers, patient lifts, shower chairs) to Central New Jersey individuals with disabilities and mobility challenges who lack adequate insurance or funds to acquire new equipment. For each year from 2006 to 2010, Your ReSource clients increased from 200 to 1,800, and the number of pieces of refurbished equipment increased from 500 to 4,700. Your ReSource has relied on individuals and groups of volunteers to augment the work of its small staff; kept almost 5,000 still-usable items out of landfills (about 75 to 80 truckloads); and helped to reduce preventable injuries at home and in other settings. As deliverables over the next 12 months, Your ReSource will increase the number of refurbished pieces of equipment by 1,000--an increase of more than 20 percent over 2010 results--and keep an additional 15 to 20 truckloads of usable home medical equipment out of the state's landfills, delivering them into the hands of people who need them.
