The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholars program was designed to increase the stature and academic standing of nursing faculty and draw more nurses to teaching careers by creating a cadre of national leaders in academic nursing through career development awards to outstanding junior nursing faculty. The purpose of this project is to investigate the degree to which differences in the quality of nursing care in hospitals explains between-hospital racial and ethnic disparities in patient outcomes such as readmissions and mortality for common conditions. The study uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) spatial analysis, multi-level, and cross-classified modeling to link unique survey data from nurses in over 600 hospitals with patient claims and neighborhood data to examine how the hospital and neighborhood factors interact to contribute to disparities in health outcomes.
