Although the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation became a national philanthropy in 1972 and has operated on a national scale since then, it also has continued funding a limited number of local institutions and projects in the New Brunswick area and throughout New Jersey. It does so in part to honor the legacy of its founder, and in part to recognize the special responsibilities to the communities and the state in which it is located. This grant supports the New Brunswick Development Corporation (Devco) in advancing real estate planning and redevelopment activities in New Brunswick, New Jersey. More specifically, the priorities for 2011 and 2012 include: (1) completion of the Wellness Plaza, a multiuse facility to include a full-service supermarket; (2) completion of the Gateway Transit Village, a multiuse facility that will house a Barnes & Noble bookstore for Rutgers University; (3) moving the Ferren Mall Redevelopment Project, a planned commercial and residential facility, from feasibility to predevelopment stage; and (4) continued predevelopment of the Cultural Center Redevelopment Project, to house the city's major performing arts groups. Devco will also continue other real estate development, now in its early stages, to maximize its pipeline of possible projects in housing and health and retail services in New Brunswick.
