The Foundation's Summer Medical and Dental Education Program was designed to develop and implement a six-week academic enrichment program for undergraduate college students from minority groups, from rural areas, and from economically disadvantaged backgrounds who are interested in pursuing careers in medicine or dentistry. This grant supports technical assistance and direction for the Foundation's Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP), in which the National Program Office (NPO) operates 12 sites for 6 weeks and serves close to 1,000 students. SMDEP is a free, summer academic enrichment program for undergraduates from disadvantaged backgrounds or underrepresented groups interested in careers in medicine or dentistry. Scholars receive the tools and course work necessary to be more successful in their journey to medical and dental school. The NPO will continue to enhance its outreach and regional recruitment activities and tracking of scholars completing the program. This year, the NPO is making more accessible SMDEP science curriculum content for students, faculty, and administrators among the 12 sites as well as to pipeline programs outside of SMDEP.
