Although the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation became a national philanthropy in 1972 and has operated on a national scale since then, it also has continued funding a limited number of local institutions and projects in the New Brunswick area and throughout New Jersey. It does so in part to honor the legacy of its founder, and in part to recognize the special responsibilities to the communities and the state in which it is located. This grant will enable Info Line of Middlesex County to continue to address the needs of individuals, including those referred by social workers at hospitals and community health centers, who seek information about health and social services. Info Line responds to phone calls by direct voice, is accessible after hours and on weekends, and posts information on its website. In times of crisis, many unemployed people and families of the working poor do not know where to turn for health, social and other emergency services. Their most pressing needs often include affordable housing or assistance in paying rent, mortgages or security deposits. Other requests include assistance in making utility payments, affordable legal representation, and services involving emergency food, employment, medical care and mental health. As deliverables, Info Line will continue its outreach to Women, Infants, and Children centers, food pantries, soup kitchens, housing authorities and other high-traffic areas to inform people about valuable services. The majority of the phone callers reside in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Because of Info Line's reliability, a significant number of the referrals come from hospital staff.
