Supporting the New Jersey Foundation for Aging's 2011-2012 program to address quality-of-life issues for seniors

Although the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation became a national philanthropy in 1972 and has operated on a national scale since then, it also has continued funding a limited number of local institutions and projects in the New Brunswick area and throughout New Jersey. It does so in part to honor the legacy of its founder, and in part to recognize the special responsibilities to the communities and the state in which it is located.This grant continues support for the New Jersey Foundation for Aging (NJFA) in addressing the health of older adults and their and their caregivers' need for social programs. Older adults are particularly vulnerable because of isolation; challenges to access to services; decreasing benefits; declining numbers of care workers and family caregivers; and, in many urban areas, crime and neighborhood blight. Economic and food security are beyond the reach of many seniors living at or below the poverty level. As deliverables, this grant funds: (1) the expansion and use of NJFA's regional cost-of-living index to help older adults plan for financial independence and increase their knowledge of eligibility for public programs, and to inform policy-makers about what it takes to support aging well in New Jersey; (2) conferences on topics that affect older adults, their caregivers and professionals in care for the aging, to promote aging well in New Jersey; and (3) the publication of Renaissance Magazine, which delivers caregiver and senior resources to more than 100,000 readers across New Jersey.
