This grant supports an implementation project to engage state health department staffs working in three specific public health programmatic areas in quality improvement (QI) and accreditation. The three areas include maternal and child health, environmental health, and prevention and control of chronic diseases. The Association of State and Territorial Health Officials will manage the planning process and involve the membership organizations of these three areas. Deliverables will include: (1) conducting three one-day meetings, each focused on one of the three program areas, to review current experience and best practices in QI in that area and to inform design of the implementation project; (2) designing an implementation project that will select state agencies as demonstration sites to conduct QI projects linked to accreditation in each of the three programmatic areas; (3) selecting a cadre of QI consultants to support the demonstration sites; and (4) engaging leaders from membership organizations, state agencies, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Health Resources and Services Administration in the three program areas in support of public health accreditation and QI. Success will be measured by a high level of engagement of the partners and the drafting of an implementation proposal to: (1) generate and support QI projects in state agencies linked to accreditation; (2) disseminate results; (3) lead to the adoption of QI tools, techniques and strategies in maternal and child health, prevention and control of chronic diseases, and environmental public health programs; and (4) assist state agencies in adopting a QI culture and increasing their readiness for accreditation.
