Assessing relationships between school crossing guard presence and childrens' physical activity

The Foundation's Active Living Research program was designed to support investigator-initiated research to identify and assess structural, environmental, and policy changes with the potential to increase population levels of physical activity.The purpose of this project is to determine if an increase in crossing guard presence is associated with an increase in the number of children walking and biking to school in elementary schools in Miami, Florida. Type and amount of physical activity will be measured through counts conducted at intervention and control intersections at pre- and post-data collection. Parental attitudes toward allowing their children to utilize active travel and their perceptions of safety will be assessed through the Safe Routes to School Parent Survey. Deliverables will include article publications and various presentations to disseminate research findings. All policy-related communications will be created in collaboration with RWJF communications staff and consultants. No RWJF funds will be used for lobbying purposes.
