This grant supports the development of examinations in two non-English languages that will enable the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) to test and award certification to applicants for positions as health care interpreters. Skilled and trained interpreters are essential for effective communication in health care encounters with patients who have limited English proficiency. Certification provides a minimum level of assurance to health care organizations of the qualifications of applicants for interpreter positions. CCHI, launched in September 2009, has to date developed and implemented a two-part certification exam for healthcare interpreters in Spanish. To facilitate the certification process, CCHI will license an interpreter certification candidate management system for online application for access through the CCHI website and provide ongoing testing service. The deliverables for this project will be the development and launching of validated oral performance examinations for two additional non-English languages.
