Technical assistance and direction for RWJF's Public Health Law Research program

The Foundation's program, Public Health Law Research: Making the Case for Laws That Improve Health (PHLR), was designed to build the evidence for public health law and policy, translate research findings into practical tools to increase the support for and use of law by policy makers and public health practitioners, and to translate findings to other fields and venues to improve and protect health. The national program office (NPO) is housed at Temple University's Beasley School of Law. In its second year, the NPO managed 29 research grantees; established a rolling rapid response process; hosted an annual conference; supported its first New Connections scholars; made presentations to public health, legal and research audiences; and produced material ranging from videos, to website materials such as a newsletter, training presentations, and published journal articles. This grant will grow the public health law research field and support the NPO's activities by: (1) building the evidence base for public health law research through RWJF grantmaking and NPO gap-filling research; (2) strengthening and expanding the field through methods development and technical assistance; (3) defining and growing the field through an online, user-friendly interface of PHLR people and publications, and through strategic collaborations with related NPOs, researchers, practitioners, and policy stakeholders; (4) managing the call for proposals, application and selection processes; and (5) injecting PHLR evidence into policy debates and public health practice by effectively translating research and disseminating their products. Additional deliverables include: a third annual grantee meeting; continuing to produce and commission relevant, timely papers on public health law research which should lead to a seminal PHLR theory and methods book. The NPO will work closely with RWJF program and communications staff to continue to build and develop this program and its activities and to strategically translate and disseminate research findings to public health and policy-maker audiences.
