Supporting the Southern California Healthcare Technology Acceleration Program to lower the cost of care for underserved communities

In partnership with the California HealthCare Foundation, Booz Allen Hamilton, and the Rady School of Management at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation will sponsor a business competition in health care innovation. The competition, at the von Liebig Center for Entrepreneurism and Technology Advancement at the UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering, will invite researchers and entrepreneurs working on low-cost health care innovations to submit their proposed technologies for potential awards of up to $45,000. The work to be funded may include proof-of-concept studies, technology development, and preliminary market research.This initiative is aimed at surfacing novel health care technologies that have the potential to reduce the cost of care, particularly for low-income populations. Up to five teams will be selected from a panel of experts and the sponsors through a competitive-review process to receive individual mentoring from the von Liebig Center's technology and business advisers to help advance their technologies toward commercialization and implementation. Deliverables will include case summaries of the five winners and a paper summarizing the process and outputs of the competition. Each co-sponsor has contributed $100,000 to $200,000 toward the awards, as well as to cover the cost of the mentoring. Each co-sponsor will also participate as a judge on the review panel.
