This grant provides funding to help plan the Senior Independent Living Research Network initiative (SILvR), which will enroll as many as 10,000 independent-living seniors, wire their homes with sensors, and connect them with researchers via the Web. The resulting living-research lab will enable researchers to explore fundamental questions about the health and behavior of and activity among independent-living seniors, and to evaluate the efficacy of care models, services and products. These funds will support planning to develop an administrative and governance structure to guide development, implementation and maintenance of SILvR; identify primary areas of research; and develop privacy and security requirements, the technology platform, data-sharing protocols and intellectual-property management. Deliverables will include development of an administrative and governance structure for the project and a detailed proposal to facilitate recruitment and fund raising.
