Creating the Public Health Associations Legal Consortium to help promote the use of law in public health

The Foundation's Public Health Law Field-Building initiative was designed to support public health practitioners, their counsel and policy-makers in using law to promote, protect and improve health through technical assistance, training, legal analyses, products, and translation and dissemination delivered through a national network of public health law centers and key stakeholder groups. To improve the ability of public health practitioners to use law as a tool to improve population health, this project will create the Public Health Associations Legal Consortium. Activities for the consortium include: (1) identifying and implementing ways to integrate public health law into existing and future activities of the four major membership associations for public health practitioners--the American Public Health Association, the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, the National Association of County and City Health Officials and the National Association of Local Boards of Health; (2) linking those associations to existing resources for public health law, such as other components of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's public health law initiative, the Public Health Law Association, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Public Health Law Program; (3) naming a legal director to help manage the process and provide legal expertise to associations without this capacity; (4) integrating emerging topics and advancements in the field of public health law into the associations' activities, and (5) developing the long-term sustainability of the consortium.
