Technical assistance and direction for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Physician Faculty Scholars program

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Physician Faculty Scholars Program (PFSP) was designed to strengthen the leadership and academic productivity of junior medical school faculty who are dedicated to improving health and health care.Since its inception, the PFSP has sought to poise a well trained cadre of academic physicians engaged in health services research and health policy to become future leaders of U.S. health and health care. It is expected that the program will achieve its short-term goals given its distinctive program elements. Such program elements include institutional and National Advisory Committee (NAC) mentors who assist in sustaining the efforts of the program scholars and provide guidance on research projects. This program provides a unique opportunity for scholars to have protected time to work on an important research project, collaborate with others, become part of an exclusive peer group, as well as present and receive feedback on early research findings. Planned activities include the development and implementation of a series of program relevant webinars for scholars and faculty mentors. Topic areas to be included within the webinar series are diversity, leadership, community-based participatory research issues, research to practice strategies, and a host of other interesting content areas. The NAC will receive additional guidance on the mentorship of the scholars and be asked to report on the progress of assigned scholars. Deliverables will include the provision of technical assistance and direction for the scholars chosen each year, the implementation of a definitive strategy that will address the historical program lag in attracting and mentoring applicants from underrepresented minority groups, and an early assessment of the lessons learned from this program including the far-reaching benefits of this PFSP experience on the scholars and their constituencies. Finally, evidence about influence of the research conducted by a scholar on a field as measured by the number of scholarly publications in peer-reviewed journals will also be assessed along with a running tally of how many scholars have been tapped for national leadership positions.
