Supporting development and evaluation of strategies to increase participation of youths and families in St. Louis Open Streets events
The Foundation's Active Living Research program was designed to support investigator-initiated research to identify and assess structural, environmental, and policy changes with the potential to increase population levels of physical activity.The purpose of this project is to develop strategy to increase urban youth and family participation in St. Louis Open Streets, a ciclovia event, and to evaluate the effect of the promotion strategies on participation levels in order to influence policy action by the Mayor's Office in St. Louis for future ciclovia events. Key informant interviews will be used to identify effective community-based communication strategies, methods for developing community partnerships, and potential route and environmental options for Open Streets. Participation levels in Open Streets will be assessed with direct observation. Deliverables will include article publications and presentations and a policy brief to disseminate research findings. All policy-related communications will be created in collaboration with RWJF communications staff and consultants. No RWJF funds will be used for lobbying purposes.
