This grant continues support for the adoption of health information technology (HIT), which remains a major policy initiative to accelerate improvements in the quality and efficiency of health care. However, the widespread adoption of HIT and electronic health records (EHRs) continues to lag among doctors, nurses, hospitals and clinics in the United States, despite prompting and financial incentives provided by the federal government. The deliverable for this project will be two annual reports that will: (1) report on the most current information on adoption of HIT; (2) evaluate the effect of HIT on the quality and costs of care; (3) assess the state of health information exchange (HIE) in the United States; (4) evaluate the readiness for meaningful use among providers who care for vulnerable populations; and (5) provide lessons learned from international activities in HIT.
