Empowering young people from at-risk communities to address root causes of childhood obesity

This grant project supports organizations that have a strong track record of organizing youths toward successful policy advocacy, and of networking and collaborating with other organizations, and that meaningfully integrate youth leadership in decision-making, staffing and advocacy work. Children and youths are the focus of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's efforts to reverse the epidemic of obesity, yet we seldom engage them as partners in addressing the factors that contribute to the epidemic. The Funders' Collaborative on Youth Organizing, which will manage this project for the Jewish Funds for Justice, will select organizations through an invited call for proposals and will support them with funds and technical assistance. Deliverables will include: outreach, a selection process, and grants to a cohort of 8 to 12 youth organizations to address childhood obesity; technical assistance to the subgrantees; convening the cohort to share learning and strategies and to strengthen networks; and a final evaluative report on the initiative and its ability to mobilize youths to address childhood obesity. When possible, the initiative will link with other Foundation programs working in similar communities or with similar policy objectives.
