Facilitating the emotional and social adjustment of Haitian earthquake evacuees

This grant supports the emotional and basic day-to-day needs of Haitian evacuees who fled to New Jersey following the devastating January 12, 2010, Haitian earthquake. Survivors who were fortunate enough to obtain visas spent weeks in Port-au-Prince and other devastated areas before they were able to evacuate to the United States. Once here, most found themselves ineligible for social services due to their immigration status. They, therefore, rely on strapped families and charitable groups to meet their most basic needs, such as food and housing, as well as to address their post-traumatic disorders and adjust to a new language and social norms. Deliverables will include providing: (1) support groups for 60 participants; (2) screening for and referral to individual counseling services, as required; (3) twice-monthly distribution of food, fresh fruits and vegetables to 450 evacuees; (4) housing stipends for 25 families; (5) monthly $20 vouchers for 120 families; (6) transportation to and case management for available services for all registered families; (7) classes in English as a second language (ESL) for 80 people; and (8) parenting-skills workshops for 100 parents.
