Although the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation became a national philanthropy in 1972 and has operated on a national scale since then, it also has continued funding a limited number of local institutions and projects in the New Brunswick area and throughout New Jersey. It does so in part to honor the legacy of its founder, and in part to recognize the special responsibilities to the communities and the state in which it is located. This 4-year, $2-million challenge grant will help to establish and fund an endowment to provide operating support to for the Eric B. Chandler Health Center to provide it with operating support to continue to serve as a critical safety-net provider for the medically underserved residents of the Greater New Brunswick, New Jersey, area. The Foundation of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, with other funders, will match the $2-million grant on a 1-to-1 dollar basis, for a total endowment of $4 million. By 2015, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation anticipates the endowment will produce sufficient income to help provide operating support for the Chandler Center.
