Conducting a social network analysis of the public health communications network

This grant supports an evaluation of the public health communications network, using social network analysis (SNA), with an emphasis on understanding the network's scope and the connections among those who are developing and disseminating content online. By identifying key topics, channels (e.g., Web sites and blogs), influencers, and relevant trends (e.g., clusters of people/sites, and topics that attract the same group of people or sites), this project will help the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) understand the relationships in the public health system, so that the Foundation staff's Public Health team can more effectively intervene and allocate resources. The grantee, the Tides Center, will develop a document with guidelines for helping the RWJF team achieve its communications goals. Activities will include interviews with key social-media influencers in public health, and a survey of public health leaders. RWJF will require Tides to participate in a learning collaborative made up of other SNA grantees. Depending on the successful implementation of the learning collaborative, a deliverable will be a public-use dataset for inclusion in the Foundation's Health and Medical Care Archive.
