Supporting the Haitian Fund for Innovation and Reconstruction for a sustainable and long-term recovery from the 2010 earthquake

This grant supports the Haitian Fund for Innovation and Reconstruction (HFIR), based at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, to help Haiti shift from relief efforts to a focus on long-term recovery from the earthquake in January. HFIR's strategy will be to engage volunteers from the estimated 2 million Haitians who live outside the nation to help the government and local organizations in the reconstruction effort, especially to address the needs of the most vulnerable members of society. HFIR will create a network of international partners to work with Haitian organizations to train Haitians in key areas, including health and education. HFIR will regrant 100 percent of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation funds to local Haitian organizations, many of which will be working with the Haitian diaspora or U.S.-based partners to support or expand services. As deliverables, HFIR will: (1) recruit and deploy a volunteer corps of 100 medical staff, professionals and technical experts from the diaspora to train Haitian counterparts in service delivery, as well as long-term planning; (2) recruit up to 50 members of the diaspora with managerial and administrative skills to build the capacity of ministry staff in implementing long-term reconstruction plans; (3) develop at least two partnerships between U.S. and Haitian institutions in nursing and construction; and (4) provide grants to support or expand services of local organizations that leverage existing investments.
