Examining the role of linked datasets in informing policy development, implementation and evaluation of health reform
The Foundation's program, State Health Access Reform Evaluation (SHARE), was designed to support research and evaluation of state health reform initiatives and develop an evidence base for future state and federal reform initiatives.This project will examine the availability and potential use of linked datasets to answer key questions about the impact of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The project will build on work done several years ago under another grant to explore whether researchers could link together survey and administrative data from agencies such as the Census Bureau, National Center for Health Statistics, and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to answer new policy questions. The project has three goals: (1) to identify new datasets that could be linked together to address policy issues; (2) to highlight the barriers preventing better or increased use of linked datasets; and (3) to make recommendations about how to build a coalition of researchers and policy makers who understand and value the important role that linked datasets can play. The grantee will produce three issue briefs on different aspects of linked datasets over the course of the grant.
