The Foundation's Active Living Research program was designed to support investigator-initiated research to identify and assess structural, environmental, and policy changes with the potential to increase population levels of physical activity. The Pennsylvania State Board of Education has proposed reforms to school nutrition standards and physical activity (PA) requirements that would position the state as a national leader in school wellness policies. Given the proposed reforms, 2010-11 may be the state's only opportunity to isolate the effects of PA toward directly informing state and national decisions tied to school wellness policies. This grant project will complement and support the Pennsylvania Department of Health's Active Schools Program to collect control group data and baseline data that will allow for a direct comparison of non-daily PA in children, six to fourteen years old. The control group data will not be collected due to state budget limitations. Deliverables will include a dissemination of the study findings at academic conferences and through peer-reviewed research articles.
