Reducing health care disparities for diabetes and hypertension patients who have limited English proficiency
The Foundation's initiative, Finding Answers: Disparities Research for Change, was designed to use research and evaluation to test hypothetical solutions for reducing racial and ethnic disparities in health care settings and actual disparity reduction outcomes in ongoing programs.Remote Video Interpretation services, provided with Webcams, for limited English proficient patients with Type II diabetes or hypertension at three California Pacific Medical Center primary care practices in San Francisco, California, will be evaluated. Quantitative methods will assess patients' A1C, LDL cholesterol level, and blood pressure. Qualitative methods will measure patient, physician and interpreter satisfaction with the interpretation services. Cost analyses will be conducted to determine the costs associated with implementing and operating Remote Video Interpreting services compared to face-to-face interpretation and telephone interpretation services.
