The Foundation's Active Living Research program was designed to support investigator-initiated research to identify and assess structural, environmental, and policy changes with the potential to increase population levels of physical activity. The purpose of this project is to investigate the cost implications of implementing the Active Design Guideline strategies into the design of family-focused affordable housing in New York City, San Antonio, and Atlanta. The project will provide a cost analysis of active design and non-active design strategies within local housing authority projects. Cost data will include initial construction cost, estimated maintenance costs and life-cycle costs where appropriate. Deliverables will include article publications and presentations to disseminate research findings as well as the production of a graphically appealing Web-based publication on findings for practitioners. All policy-related communications will be created in collaboration with RWJF communications staff and consultants. No RWJF funds will be used for lobbying purposes.
