Sustaining the advocacy capacity of Trust for America's Health for improving the nation's public health system

The Foundation's initiative, Building Advocacy for Policy Change to Improve the Nation's Health, was designed to develop and advance policy recommendations for how a modernized public health system should be structured, funded, staffed and held accountable.This grant supports the Trust for America's Health (TFAH) to develop and promote a strategy for achieving the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) vision of a modernized public health system that is accredited, accountable, and relies on evidence to determine which policies and programs improve health. TFAH will: conduct and manage research and policy analysis that articulates the options for implementing this vision, with an emphasis on the opportunities afforded by the new health reform law; host convenings to develop consensus within the public health community; and use strategic communications, regular issue reports, and advocacy activities to promote federal policies and funding to achieve these goals. Deliverables will include: (1) development, dissemination, and policy outreach related to three annual reports and four issue briefs; (2) ongoing outreach to public health leaders; (3) recommendations on formalizing the public health advocacy network; and (4) ongoing policy and media-relations activities to increase federal support for public health and prevention. TFAH will not use Foundation dollars for lobbying.
