The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholars program was designed to increase the stature and academic standing of nursing faculty and draw more nurses to teaching careers by creating a cadre of national leaders in academic nursing through career development awards to outstanding junior nursing faculty.Dr. Betty Bekemeier was selected as a 2010 RWJF Nurse Faculty Scholar. The goal of her research is to create and test a multi-state data system for monitoring public health practice changes and variation in relation to health outcomes. Over the next three years, she will have 60 percent protected time to focus on program activities; receive financial support for career development activities in her research and scholarly focus area; work closely with institutional and national mentors to develop her career as an academic nurse leader; and receive training and mentoring in areas such as developing a research and academic career plan, securing research funding, integrating research and scholarship into teaching, exerting leadership through professional and university service, influencing health care policy through research, and developing skills to assume a senior leadership role in academic nursing.
