Supporting an intervention to improve chances for girls' positive development into adolescence

The Foundation's Local Initiative Funding Partners Program is a matching grants program designed to establish partnerships between the Foundation and local grantmakers in support of innovative, community-based projects that improve health and health care for underserved and vulnerable populations.Girl Matters-It's Elementary! offers a gender-responsive intervention program to effectively address the underlying issues contributing to young girls' (grades K-5) disruptive behaviors in two Duval County, Florida, schools. The main goal is to reduce elementary school suspensions and expulsions and prevent the arrests and incarcerations that send girls into the juvenile justice system. The comprehensive approach includes training for school staff and three tiers of service: short-term, in-school interventions; work with a mentor and community referral networks; and intensive care management, family counseling and in-home support.
