Increasing the capacity of New Jersey food banks to serve poor and low-income families

This grant will help increase the capacity of the state's five food banks to distribute more emergency food to provide other assistance to people in need through their network of 1,500 community-based pantries. The bulk of these grant monies will be used to: (1) expand a food stamp outreach and enrolment program; (2) purchase refrigerated trucks and support of driver wages to increase the food gleaning program from supermarkets and the collection and distribution of fresh produce; (3) partner with a major supermarket chain to implement a re-entry job training, support and employment program for people who otherwise face obstacles in the job market; and (4) buy more food.
