Evaluating U.S. children's food purchases and caloric intake to gauge the food industry's impact on prevention of childhood obesity

This grant supports a rigorous and independent evaluation of the industry-led Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation (HWCF) initiative to reduce excess calories consumed by U.S. children and adolescents ages 2 through 19, including those in low-income and high-risk racial/ethnic populations. During Year 1, the project team will: (1) convene a scientific advisory committee to review and inform evaluation planning and implementation; (2) identify the most reliable methods and data for assessing the degree to which the HWCF initiative affects the purchase and consumption of discretionary calories by children and adolescents; (3) review and evaluate database options for assessing the effects of HWCF product changes on the sources and number of non-nutritive calories consumed by youths and on youth obesity levels; (4) develop and implement a rigorous three-year evaluation plan; (5) publicly report on Year-1 evaluation planning, methods and results; and (6) develop a proposal and budget for evaluation activities in Years 2 and 3.
