Technical assistance and direction for RWJF's Public Health Law Research program

The Foundation's program, Public Health Law Research: Making the Case for Laws That Improve Health, was designed to build the evidence for public health law and policy, translate research findings into practical tools to increase the support for and use of law by policy makers and public health practitioners, and to translate findings to other fields and venues to improve and protect health. The national program office (NPO) for the Public Health Law Research initiative is housed at Temple University's Beasley School of Law, with Scott Burris, J.D., serving as the National Program Director. During the first year, the program established an office, determined vision and objectives, produced many relevant documents and training materials, and helped manage the call for proposals process to award 15 grants in public health law research. This grant will grow the public health law research field and support the NPO's activities by: (1) building the evidence base for public health law research through RWJF grantmaking and NPO research; (2) providing methodologic assistance to both grantees and other partners; (3) expanding strategic collaborations with other NPOs and academic, practitioner and policy-based stakeholder groups; (4) managing the call for proposals, application and selection processes; and (5) effectively translating the research and disseminating products and training to policy makers and practitioners. The NPO will also support the first cohort of New Connections scholars in the area of public health law. Additional deliverables include: a second annual grantee meeting; formalizing criteria and a process for rapid response funding; and continuing to produce and commission relevant, timely papers on public health law research. The NPO will work closely with RWJF program and communications staff to continue to build and develop this program and its activities.
