Supporting Healthy Eating Research's Year-6 activities

The Foundation's program, Healthy Eating Research: Building Evidence to Prevent Childhood Obesity, was designed to support investigator-initiated research to identify and assess environmental and policy influences with the greatest potential to improve healthy eating and weight patterns among the nation's children.This grant supports the development and dissemination of several products to inform emerging policy debates. The grantee will use the funds to commission and support experts in the field of healthy eating research (HER) and policy to analyze and synthesize emerging evidence for peer-reviewed HER research briefs, syntheses, papers and analyses, and to help cover the costs of disseminating policy-relevant journal supplements. Possible topics for commissioned papers and analyses may include those related to: (1) improving access to fresh drinking water in settings of relevance for U.S. children; (2) updating school and child-care food policies; (3) improving access to, and use of, farms and farmers' markets; (4) addressing obesity in populations facing food insecurity and hunger; (5) understanding the effects of agricultural policies and subsidies on youth obesity; and (6) understanding the supermarket and corner-store marketing policies needed to help reverse childhood obesity. Deliverables will include four research briefs, six to eight commissioned papers or syntheses, and five to ten commissioned strategic analyses of existing policy-relevant datasets.
