Providing rapid-response funding to enable communities and groups to support, protect or implement smoke-free policies (Round 5)

The Foundation's initiative, Supporting Advocacy to Reduce Tobacco Use and Direct Tobacco-Related State Revenue to Health Priorities, was designed to support state and local advocacy efforts and educate policy-makers and other key audiences in up to 15 states about the need for tobacco control and other public health measures.This project will provide rapid-response assistance to support local and state campaigns for smoke-free air. Secondhand smoke continues to be one of the most serious public health issues facing the nation today. This project uses a proven combination of activities to create, strengthen and protect smoke-free policies, including strategic planning; rapid-response funding for key projects; technical assistance and training; resource development to support smoke-free campaigns and implementation of smoke-free-air laws; and information dissemination to mobilize smoke-free supporters and educate key stakeholders and policy-makers. The goal of this project is to increase the percentage of the U.S. population covered by smoke-free-air laws, with a target of 75 percent by 2015. The Tobacco Strategy Group -- comprising staff from the American Nonsmokers' Rights Foundation, Center for Tobacco-Free Kids, American Heart Association and American Cancer Society, with strategic counsel from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) -- will fund rapid-response projects. The grantee will not use RWJF funds for lobbying.
