This grant supports a partnership between the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Pew Charitable Trusts to help shape the Child Nutrition Reauthorization 2010 (CNR). This two-year initiative will, during the rulemaking process: (1) advocate that revised United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) standards be guided by Institute of Medicine recommendations for all foods sold in schools; (2) encourage Congress to provide funding to allow schools to purchase healthier foods and cafeteria equipment and to provide training and technical assistance for food-service workers; and (3) work with USDA to establish rigorous school food-safety standards. Activities will include drafting regulatory language and policy proposals; supporting policy-relevant research, such as health impact assessments and cost-benefit analyses; conducting Capitol Hill briefings; educating the media and public on school nutrition; and developing grassroots and grasstops advocacy. Pew will provide at least a one-to-one dollar match toward this effort. No Foundation funds will support lobbying.
