Developing interventions to reduce variations in health care use while enhancing quality and lowering costs

This grant provides funds to a collaborative of 15 academic medical centers to purchase National Death Index data. This collaborative, known as Variation in Quality, Utilization, Outcomes: Transformation and Evaluation (V-QUOTE), will: (1) examine the baseline variation in quality and utilization among elderly heart-failure patients hospitalized at a selection of academic medical centers; (2) define and implement sustainable, evidence-based care-transition interventions to improve quality and lessen the variation in utilization; and (3) examine the effect of these interventions on quality and utilization among the elderly heart failure patients hospitalized at participating medical centers.
