Supporting a conference on the social determinants of mental health

This grant supports a conference to highlight the ways in which social conditions impact mental health and propose practical solutions to mental illness that are informed by social context. The Social Determinants of Mental Health: From Awareness to Action conference, scheduled for June 3-4, 2010, will convene professionals from diverse disciplinary backgrounds (including mental health, housing, transportation, public safety, and environmental sciences), policy makers, service providers, and people impacted directly and indirectly by mental illness. The project will deliver: (1) a working group that will develop an action agenda for integrating the social determinants perspective into the funding and research priorities of government agencies and private foundations; (2) a Social Determinants of Mental Health Impact Assessment Tool that can be used to seed, inform, and promote new and more effective ways to provide mental health care; and (3) documentation and dissemination of conference outcomes through online posting of transcripts and video clips; presentations to public agencies, community-based organizations and professional associations; legislative briefings; and press releases to local and national media outlets.
