This grant will launch a program to help South Asian women immigrants in New Jersey who are victims of domestic abuse to become economically independent. Lack of economic independence is one of the most common reasons for battered women to stay in abusive relationships. This program will help break the cycle of violence and will deliver: (1) culturally appropriate employment-training and financial competency materials; (2) on-site employment clinics, as well as mobile clinics and phone consultations for clients who have transportation problems; (3) referrals to existing resources, such as computer training, English as a Second Language classes, and microenterprise assistance; and (4) a brochure for distribution at community events to spread awareness about the program.
