Exploring social-networking strategies to leverage work of the Substance Abuse Policy Research Program

The Foundation's Substance Abuse Policy Research Program was designed to provide support for investigators to conduct policy research on a variety of subjects directed at helping the country reduce the harm caused by substance abuse.Over the past 14 years, the Substance Abuse Policy Research Program (SAPRP) has funded over 360 research projects, developed a cadre of researchers, published over 1,200 publications, created a series of Knowledge Assets, and published a series of research agendas to guide the direction for future research in this area. This grant will help to leverage the work of SAPRP researchers and the National Program Office to support a social networking project that will test a number of Web 2.0 strategies. Activities include: (1) transfer a substance abuse policy knowledgebase accumulated by a grant funded research program to the public domain; (2) mobilize experts to participate in encouraging and moderating discussion as it pertains to the knowledgebase, its application to policy, and the research agenda; (3) conduct an experiment using social networking to examine the impact on dissemination; (4) use social networking strategies to inform policy makers, journalists, researchers, advocates, and the public about substance abuse policy research; and (5) connect researchers around substance abuse policy research, including the knowledge base and research agenda. Deliverables include a report and presentation to RWJF detailing lessons learned in the context of SAPRP and insight into how these strategies could impact the work of other Foundation-supported National Programs.
