The Foundation's initiative, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Practice-Based Research Network in Public Health (PBRN), was designed to develop a practice-based research network for public health to help stakeholders understand how public health systems research can be used to improve public health performance and impact. The New York PBRN will strengthen the capacity of local health departments to plan, implement and evaluate evidence-based interventions to address community health priorities. The initial research project will use both quantitative and qualitative approaches to characterize impediments to evidence-based decision making in local health departments and to identify factors that promote and support its use. Research results will be disseminated to enhance and reinforce evidence-based decision making among local health department personnel. The New York State Department of Health, Office of Public Health Practice, is the lead organization for the network. Other network members include the New York State Association of County Health Officials, University at Albany School of Public Health, the Northeast Public Health Leadership Institute, the Center for Public Health Continuing Education, the New York Academy of Medicine, and the New York-New Jersey Public Health Training Center.
