Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Practice-Based Research Network in Public Health

The Foundation's initiative, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Practice-Based Research Network in Public Health (PBRN), was designed to develop a practice-based research network for public health to help stakeholders understand how public health systems research can be used to improve public health performance and impact. The Minnesota PBRN will build upon a successful collaboration among public health practice, community, and research organizations, including lead agency Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), the Local Public Health Association of Minnesota, the State Community Health Services Advisory Committee, and the University of Minnesota School of Public Health (SPH). The first research project will examine variation in the organizational structures and operational environments of Minnesota public health agencies that influence the quality of public health practice. Findings will inform a comparative analysis of local health department performance in real and simulated public health emergencies. Interests for future research include organizational structures and operating environments of local health departments, public health financing and quality improvement. Project teams comprised of state health department staff and public health graduate students will conduct individual research projects with guidance from an advisory panel tailored for each project and comprised of SPH faculty, MDH staff and local public health officials. Using this approach, the network will facilitate the development of a new cohort of researchers experienced in public health systems and services research and skilled in practice-research collaboration.
