Increasing the use of the Young Epidemiology Scholars' teaching units

The Foundation's Young Epidemiology Scholars (YES) Program was designed to attract the best and the brightest high school students to become the public health leaders of the future.This particular project will support at least six professional development workshops coupled with online social networking to increase the teaching of epidemiology by middle and high school teachers of science, math, health and social studies. The online curriculum developed for the Young Epidemiology Scholars Program will form the basis of the training. This project will build on a previous grant from the Foundation and add approximately 30 online social-network meetings, which will connect the 200 alumni from previous trainings, in addition to teachers trained under this project. The project will target teachers in disadvantaged school districts, and it has already developed relationships with school districts in Newark, Pittsburgh, Washington, and Atlanta. Deliverables will include: (1) the training of 180 teachers; (2) the targeting of schools where the majority of students are eligible for free/reduced-price lunches for at least 60 percent of workshop participants; and (3) participation by at least 50 workshop alumni in the social network.
