The Foundation's Active Living Research program was designed to support investigator-initiated research to identify and assess structural, environmental, and policy changes with the potential to increase population levels of physical activity. The purpose of this project is to develop and validate a generalizable instrument that will measure school policy and environmental variables that are associated with the quantity and quality of school physical activity. The tool will then be tested in 75 elementary schools from three regions of the United States to report physical activity opportunities in physical education and recess and at other school times. Deliverables will include article publications, a finalized school physical activity policy measurement tool to be posted on Active Living Research's Web site, and presentations to disseminate research findings. All policy-related communications will be created in collaboration with RWJF communications staff and consultants. No RWJF funds will be used for lobbying purposes.
