The Foundation's Active Living Research program was designed to support investigator-initiated research to identify and assess structural, environmental, and policy changes with the potential to increase population levels of physical activity.The purpose of this project is to examine the impact of public middle school policies in Wake County, North Carolina, for facility use and access on the following outcomes: number and type of physical activity programs and activities that are offered or available at middle school sport facilities; amount and type of physical activity that occurs at each middle school sport facilities; and the cost of middle school sport facility construction and maintenance. The results of this study will assess whether middle school policies that include community partnerships and joint-use agreements yield a greater potential for increasing youth physical activity levels. Deliverables will include article publications, a series of workshops with local school officials to develop implementation strategies, and presentations to disseminate research findings. All policy-related communications will be created in collaboration with RWJF communications staff and consultants. No RWJF funds will be used for lobbying purposes.
