Through their design and evaluation of Lit, a smoking reduction game to be delivered on mobile platforms like the iPhone, a team at Columbia University Teachers College tested a novel approach to reducing or eliminating tobacco use in players' lives. The game involves breathing into a microphone to control game play, and is coupled with sound, color, images, challenges and feedback to mimic the stimulant and relaxant effects of smoking. The study tests whether smokers who crave the physiological effects of smoking will reach for this five-minute game instead of a cigarette. Innovative game design principles, such as the use of a breath controller with mobile devices, are also an outcome of this work.
This project was funded as part of Health Games Research, a national program of the Pioneer Portfolio dedicated to funding and supporting research to advance the effectiveness of interactive games for health.
