Assessing the effectiveness of a culturally-adapted, automated system to improve blood pressure control through exercise promotion among Black adults
The Foundation's initiative, Finding Answers: Disparities Research for Change, was designed to use research and evaluation to test hypothetical solutions for reducing racial and ethnic disparities in health care settings and actual disparity reduction outcomes in ongoing programs.This project will test the effectiveness of a culturally adapted, computer-based intervention to improve physical activity and lower systolic blood pressure in sedentary middle-aged black adults with low socioeconomic status. Pilot tests showed that this automated system significantly increased physical activity in a predominantly white sample and just as much as treatment with a counselor. The project will also evaluate how acceptable the intervention is to patients and clinical staff, and how feasible it is to implement in the clinical setting. Finally, this project will test the relation of ethnic identity to the effect and use of the intervention. This will include an assessment of cost from the patient and institutional perspectives. The study will take place within a health network that provides care to two-thirds of Boston's black residents. A deliverable will be a public use data set for inclusion in the Foundation's Health and Medical Care Archive.
